Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has offered help to wildfire-ravaged Los Angeles, saying Ukrainian firefighters can help their US counterparts save lives.
A deadly fire inferno has swept through Los Angeles, killing at least 24 people in less than a week. Entire communities are in rubble, thousands left homeless. Conditions could dramatically worsen in the second largest city in the United States as strong gusts fan the flames.
Zelensky has instructed Ukraine's interior minister to prepare for the possible involvement of rescuers in fighting the California wildfires.
"The situation there is extremely difficult and Ukrainians can help Americans save lives," he said in a video posted on the social platform X, specifying that help "is currently being coordinated."
"150 of our firefighters are already prepared," Zelensky added.
The United States under President Joe Biden was Kiev's biggest backer during the war, providing more than $65 billion in military aid after Moscow invaded in February 2022.
President-elect Donald Trump has promised to resolve the conflict in "24 hours" once he takes office, raising fears in Ukraine that it will be forced to make major concessions in exchange for peace. | BGNES, AFP
