Italy strongly supports Ukraine and has sent weapons to help it defend itself against Russian forces, while insisting they should only be used on Ukrainian territory.
Before he left for Italy, Zelensky insisted on the same to allies meeting at the US Ramstein air base in Germany. There, Washington unveiled $250 million in new military aid for Ukraine.
He also met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The meetings took place as Moscow's forces advanced into Ukraine's eastern Donbas region.
On 5 September, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that taking the region was his "main goal" in the conflict, which has dragged on for two and a half years.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban - who upset his European Union counterparts and Zelensky by meeting with Putin in Moscow in July - also participated in the three-day Italian forum.
Zelensky rejected Orban's calls in Chernobyl for a ceasefire, saying Putin had never honored previous agreements. | BGNES
