"Russia calls on the Bulgarian authorities to end the persecution of representatives of the "Rusofili" movement."
This was stated by the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commenting on the arrest in Plovdiv of the chairman of the local branch of the movement, Zlatomir Devlensky, TASS reported.
Zakharova recalled that Devlensky was arrested on July 8 on suspicion of inciting the disclosure of state secrets.
"Unfounded accusations of espionage have already been brought against activists of the national movement "Rusofili". We call on the Bulgarian authorities to stay within the legal framework and refrain from persecuting their citizens based on fabricated and unfounded accusations," the spokesperson said.
According to the diplomat, such actions by the Bulgarian authorities only demonstrate "disrespect for basic human rights and freedoms, including the right to freedom of expression."
Zlatomir Devlenski, 33, is a political scientist, PhD student at Plovdiv University and graduate student at Astrakhan State University. In 2022, he is running for deputy from the Bulgarian Socialist Party. | BGNES
