"Shogun" on TV channel FX was conceived as a miniseries, but after collecting 9 million views in its first week alone on streaming platforms, the team may try to make a sequel.
The possibilities are almost endless with these numbers. Based on James Clavell's book of the same name, the series follows the fictional portrayal of a 17th-century Japanese leader, Lord Yoshi Toranaga, who struggles to survive as his enemies unite against him. However, if the creators of the series want to continue with a second season, they will be forced to create new storylines instead of building on the story from the one book.
FX has neither confirmed nor denied a second season. Before we get excited about the possibility of the future, here's what the cast and crew have said so far about a possible but elusive second season.
Co-writer and showrunner Justin Marks told The Direct that the season one finale ends "right where the book ends." He explained to The Hollywood Reporter that "Shogun" took nearly five years to complete, so the team is a long way from a sequel: "We did this series so long ago, and there was a lot of post-production on it. It's not a regular TV series, where which, we would already be in the writers' room, and even on the set."
Michaela Clavell, executive producer and daughter of James Clavell, is a little more optimistic that her father's television legacy will live on."The public will tell us if there's an appetite for it. We'll see. It's a great question. I'd like to know the full answer, but I don't," she said.
Editors Maria Gonzalez and Aika Miyake explained to ComicBook.com that when they were ending the series, there were no "serious plans" for another season. Gonzalez explained: "I think we're still in that situation. I'm not sure if it's going to happen. Obviously, it's not up to us."
Miyake added, "Personally, I want to see a second season! ... There's definitely something to build on, for sure." /BGNES
