"Russia's attempts to colonize Ukraine for more than 300 years can be characterized as cultural genocide."
This was stated by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski in Berlin during the Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine 2024., TVP World reported.
The Berlin conference, organized by Ukraine and Germany, aims to mobilize international support for the reconstruction, reforms and modernization of Ukraine. The event takes place on June 11 and 12, with the participation of diplomats from Ukraine, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom and the US envoy.
Sikorsky highlighted Russia's historical oppression of Ukraine, including efforts to erase Ukrainian cultural heritage.
"History and geography matter," said Poland's top diplomat.
He also pointed to Poland's experience with Russian missile attacks.
"A Russian missile fell just 10 km from my home," he said, referring to an incident near Bydgoszcz in the winter of 2023, illustrating the immediate danger Russia poses.
"Poland will continue to support Ukraine's defense efforts and assist in its recovery and pursuit of EU membership," Sikorski said during a conference panel featuring Ukrainian and British foreign ministers Dmytro Kuleba and David Cameron. .
He also called on Kiev to undertake sweeping reforms during the crisis, suggesting that such action may be more feasible now than in peacetime.
