Von der Leyen: The decision for Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen was historic

The decision for Romania and Bulgaria was historic. From 1 January 2025, controls at internal land borders will be abolished. They will be fully integrated into the Schengen area and that is where they belong.

This is what European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and European Council President Antonio Costa.

On the Schengen decision, Von der Leyen added: "It was a big step forward."

The European Commission president reported "many achievements during the Hungarian presidency" of the (EU) Council.

"You advanced our support for Ukraine with the adoption of the 15th sanctions package and the G7 framework agreement on loans. I would also like to underline the ambitious Budapest Declaration. We all signed up to one goal - a competitive Europe. The declaration outlines the homework we need to do to ensure that Europe remains a major destination for business," Von der Leyen addressed Orban. | BGNES
