Verstappen: I would have won the title much earlier if I had driven for McLaren this season

Max Verstappen has said he would have won the Formula 1 world championship this season even if he had driven a McLaren car instead of a Red Bull one, and much earlier.

Verstappen won the world championship for the fourth time in a row in his career at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, two races from the end of the campaign. Red Bull, who have been the constructors' champions for the past two seasons, are trailing McLaren and Ferrari this season.

Verstappen's eight wins this season are five more than any other driver, although only one of them has come in the last 12 starts.

"Things like that only motivate me. If people are critical and think I can win if I drive the best car, then I prove the opposite. If I don't get credit for that now, then I don't know what else I can do. Would I have been champion with McLaren? Yes! "And much earlier", the 27-year-old Dutchman said, quoted by De Telegraaf.

Verstappen is the sixth driver with at least four titles in his collection after Alain Prost (4), Sebastian Vettel (4), Juan Manuel Fangio (5), Lewis Hamilton (7) and Michael Schumacher (7).

There are two races left in the F1 season - Qatar on December 1 and Abu Dhabi a week later. | BGNES
