Venom: The Last Dance tops the North American box office

Marvel's new film Venom: The Last Dance failed to reach the feat of the previous two installments in the series, but still topped the North American box office with $51 million in ticket sales.

Venom faced stiff competition from the World Series of Baseball featuring the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Tom Hardy once again becomes a terrifying alien with huge teeth. The cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple and Rhys Ifans.

Meanwhile, with Halloween just days away, Paramount's horror film Smile 2 slipped just one spot from last weekend, taking in $40.7 million. Naomi Scott plays a troubled pop star afflicted by a dark curse.

FilmNation's new religious thriller Conclave took third place with $6.5 million. Ralph Fiennes, who plays a cardinal called upon to "manage" the election of a new pope, finds himself embroiled in shadowy, behind-the-scenes intrigue as he grapples with questions of his own faith - and ambition.

Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow also play cardinals, each with their own agendas, and Isabella Rossellini is a nun.

Analyst David A. Gross said the film, which has received "sensational critical reviews," is well positioned to compete for best picture at the Oscars. Edward Berger ("It's Quiet on the Western Front") directed the film, which was based on the thriller by Robert Harris.

In fourth place, down two places, is Universal and DreamWorks Animation's "Wild Robot," about a robot that must get along with fluffy forest creatures after being stranded on a remote island. The film grossed $6.5 million.

StudioCanal's romantic drama Living in Time held on in fifth place with $4.8 million. Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star. | BGNES, AFP
