Results on Wall Street were mixed, with markets in wait-and-see mode ahead of the release of U.S. inflation data this week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.4% to 39,357.01, and the broader S&P 500 was unchanged at 5,344.39.
The technology-rich Nasdaq Composite rose 0.2 per cent to 16,780.61.
"It's another one of those watch-and-wait days," said Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers.
"Volume is not very high," he added while noting that the coming week will be "busy."
In particular, investors are watching the report on the consumer price index - a key gauge of inflation - due on Wednesday.
That "should have some impact on how we view the inflation battle," Sosnick added.
The Federal Reserve is widely expected to begin cutting interest rates at its September meeting, although a weaker-than-expected labour market report earlier this month fueled fears about the health of the US economy.
Markets are watching to see if inflation is cooling at a gradual pace - a signal that the world's largest economy is indeed hitting a "soft landing" in which price rises slow without falling.
