"I make it very clear that there must be no military action in Lebanon that resembles that in Gaza and that leaves a result similar to that in Gaza," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.
Miller was responding to a question about a video posted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"You have an opportunity to save Lebanon before it falls into the abyss of a long war that will lead to the destruction and suffering we see in Gaza," Netanyahu said. "I say to you, the people of Lebanon: Free your country from Hezbollah so that this war can end."
Separately, Miller said the United States was "particularly concerned" about the humanitarian situation in northern Gaza, where the territory's civil defense agency said Israeli forces had stepped up shelling and closed roads, impeding the delivery of aid.
"We are extremely concerned about the humanitarian situation across Gaza and particularly the humanitarian situation in northern Gaza, and I can tell you that this has been the subject of some very urgent discussions between our two governments," he said.
"We have made it clear to the Israeli government that under international humanitarian law it has an obligation to allow food and water and other necessary humanitarian aid to reach all parts of Gaza," Miller said.
"We fully expect them to fulfill those obligations," Miller added, while warning Israel not to "conduct operations in Gaza permanently." | BGNES
