US authorities have arrested 538 illegal migrants and deported hundreds in a major operation.
"Trump administration arrests 538 illegal immigrant criminals," Caroline Leavitt wrote in a post on social platform X, adding that "hundreds" were deported by military aircraft.
"The largest mass deportation operation in history is underway. Promises have been made. Promises have been kept," she added, as quoted by AFP.
During the campaign, Trump promised to crack down on illegal immigration and began his second term with a slew of executive actions aimed at reviewing entry into the United States.
He signed executive orders declaring a "national emergency" at the southern border and announced the deployment of more troops to the area while vowing to deport "criminal aliens."
Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents "raided a local establishment detaining undocumented residents as well as citizens without presenting a warrant."
Earlier in the week, the Republican-led U.S. Congress gave the green light to a bill to expand pretrial detention for criminal suspects. | BGNES
