UNESCO Director-General condemns killing of Juan Jumalon in the Philippines


Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of Juan Jumalon during a live broadcast in the city of Calamba, in the Philippines on 5 November 2023.

 
“I condemn the killing of Juan Jumalon. Journalists must be protected in the exercise of their activities, and I call on the national authorities to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice” said Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General.
 
Jumalon, also known as DJ Johnny Walker, was the regular host of a radio programme on 94.7 Gold Mega Calamba FM. He was fatally shot at a home-based radio station while broadcasting. The President of the Philippines condemned the killing and ordered an investigation.
