UN is planning an "ambitious increase" in aid, after the country's new leaders assured the international community of full access to humanitarian aid.
Earlier, UN chief Antonio Guterres hailed the "commitment of the interim government to protect the civilian population" and humanitarian workers.
"I also welcome their agreement to provide full humanitarian access through all border crossings; to eliminate bureaucracy in relation to dismissals and visits for humanitarian workers; to ensure the continuity of basic government services, including healthcare and education; and to start a true and practical dialogue with the wider humanitarian community", said that.
Guterres sent UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher to Damascus for talks with Abu Mohammed al-Jolani and interim Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir.
Jolani, who now uses the real name Ahmed al-Sharaa, heads the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTW), which led the lightning offensive that led to the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.
Fletcher wrote in X that this was "a moment of cautious hope in Syria."
"I am encouraged by the meeting in Damascus, including the constructive discussion with the commander of the new administration, Mr. Ahmed al-Sharaa. We have the basis for an ambitious expansion of vital humanitarian aid," he added.
Assad escaped from Syria, after which on December 8 the rebels, led by the HTŠ, took over the capital Damascus, ending decades of brutal dictatorship and years of civil war.
The collapse of Assad's rule shocked the world and sparked celebrations in Syria and beyond, after his crackdown met with democratic protests in 2011. led to a bloody war.
Assad left behind a country scarred by decades of torture, disappearances and summary executions, as well as poor economic management, which left 70% of the population in need of aid.
The HDŠ leader is trying to assure the minorities at home and the governments abroad that the temporary leaders of the country will protect all Syrians, as well as state institutions.
HTŠ is rooted in the Syrian clone of Al Qaeda and has been designated as a "terrorist" organization by many Western governments. | BGNES
