Ukraine has appointed Valery Zaluzhny as its new envoy to the UK, a month after he was removed from his post as the country's commander-in-chief.
"On March 7, 2024, the President of Ukraine approved the nomination of Valeriy Zaluzhny for the post of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the UK," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The popular general has led the Ukrainian army since the start of the war against Russia, fending off significantly more powerful invading forces in the early months of the conflict.
Dubbed the "Iron General" by the Ukrainian media, Zaluzhny became a symbol of the country's resistance and enjoyed extremely high public approval.
He was replaced by Oleksandr Sirsky, who commanded Ukraine's lightning counter-offensive in the fall of 2022 in the northeastern Kharkiv region. / BGNES
