Ukraine and South Korea agree to deepen security cooperation

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he discussed with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yol the deployment of North Korean troops to help Russia and agreed to deepen security cooperation.

The talks between the leaders took place at a time when there is growing concern among Ukraine's allies about the apparent transfer of thousands of North Korean soldiers to Russia to support Moscow's invasion efforts.

"We discussed the involvement of North Korean military forces in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The conclusion is clear: this war is becoming an international one, extending beyond the borders of two countries," Zelensky wrote on social media.

Meanwhile, President Yun described the transfer of North Korean troops as "unprecedented and dangerous" and called for "close communication and counteraction in the future."

Zelensky and Yun, according to the transcripts of the conversation read from their offices, confirmed that South Korea and Ukraine would send delegations to their countries to deepen security and intelligence cooperation.

Yun, according to his office, said South Korea would continue to support peace "while working with its allies to explore additional cooperative measures to benefit the people of Ukraine."

News of the leaders' phone call came just as North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Seong-hui arrived in Russia for an official visit. | BGNES
