Ukraine accuses Russian soldiers of shooting at civilians in frontline town

The prosecutor's office said it was investigating "shooting at a civilian vehicle" and possible "killings of civilians" in Selidovo, Donetsk region.

They explained that they based their claim on a video broadcast by a Telegram channel linked to the Ukrainian army, as well as press reports.

"On 24 August, Russian soldiers allegedly fired automatic weapons at a civilian vehicle in the settlement," the prosecutor's office said.

Two civilians were inside, one of whom was wounded before being rescued by Ukrainian soldiers, the same source said.

The drone footage, screenshots of which were shared by the prosecutor's office, shows a man rushing out of the car, then surrounding it and opening a door. The caption says the vehicle came under "enemy fire".

Two soldiers then remove an apparently wounded man from the car and evacuate him to a nearby building.

The video was posted on August 26 by the Telegram channel "The Ghost of Khortytsa," which features a fighter in a Ukrainian army unit.

However, the date, location or identity of the people who appear in this video have not been clearly established.

The prosecutor's office also said it was investigating reports that Russian soldiers had opened fire on 2 women and that "bodies of civilians" had been found in areas under Russian control.

Russian troops, who are on the offensive in eastern Ukraine, have only recently entered Selidovo and fighting is taking place in this town, which has already been badly damaged by the strikes and abandoned by much of the population.

Selidovo is about 15 kilometres from Pokrovsk, the urban centre and logistical hub of the Ukrainian army, which the Russian forces are determined to take. | BGNES
