Typhoon Shanshan brought record amounts of rain on August 30 as it slowly passed through Japan. The element caused chaos in transport and landslides, in which up to 6 people died.
The typhoon, one of the strongest to hit Japan in decades, has weakened and is forecast to downgrade to a tropical cyclone by September 2, although gusts were still reaching 126 km/h on August 30, AFP reported.
Even before it made landfall on the island of Kyushu, a landslide triggered by the heavy rains that preceded it killed a family of three late on August 27 in Aichi Prefecture, about 1,000 kilometers away.
Government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi confirmed the deaths of four people, but said in one case "the connection to the typhoon is being investigated." Two more people are feared dead and two others are missing, Hayashi said.
According to him, 8 people were seriously injured, and 70 others had minor injuries. Almost 200 buildings were damaged. | BGNES
