Turkish President Erdogan signed the protocol for Sweden's accession to NATO

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed the protocol for Sweden's admission to NATO and submitted it to the Turkish parliament for ratification.

A brief statement from the presidential communications directorate said Erdogan signed the protocol for Sweden's accession to NATO, which was then submitted to the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Anadolu Agency reported.

It is not yet known when the parliament will consider the document.

Sweden and its neighbor Finland abandoned a decade-long policy of military neutrality following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Finland joined the military bloc in April.

Erdogan has been delaying ratification of Sweden's membership, accusing the government in Stockholm of being too soft on Kurdish fighters and other groups that Ankara sees as a threat to its security. Turkey was also angered by a series of desecrations of the Koran in Sweden.

All 31 NATO allies must approve Sweden's membership. Turkey and Hungary have not yet ratified it.

Earlier this month, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Turkey to quickly ratify Sweden's NATO membership. /BGNES
