A New York jury has ordered former US President and 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump to pay $83.3 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll, who was found to have sexually assaulted and defamed, AFP reported.
The civil order, which caused a resounding outcry in federal court, far exceeds the more than $10 million in defamation damages that Carroll had sought.
Trump almost immediately lashed out, calling the verdict "ridiculous" and vowing to appeal.
Jurors reached their decision after just under 3 hours of deliberation.
Trump was in court earlier, leaving at one point to return for closing arguments. He was not in court when the judicial officer read the amount of the compensation and the criminal liability./BGNES
