Trump's ambassador to Ukraine: Both Kiev and Moscow need to concede a bit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "has already indicated that he will soften his position on the drought," Kellogg said, adding that Russian leader Vladimir Putin "will also have to soften his position."
Donald Trump's envoy for Ukraine said both Kiev and Moscow will have to make concessions if they want to successfully negotiate a solution to the ongoing war.
"I think both sides will back down a little bit," Keith Kellogg, a retired lieutenant general who recently returned from a visit to Ukraine, said in a television interview with Fox News.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "has already indicated that he will soften his position on the drought," Kellogg said, adding that Russian leader Vladimir Putin "will also have to soften his position."
Zelensky has long rejected any territorial concessions to Russia, whose troops control much of southeastern Ukraine, but has come under pressure amid mounting battlefield losses and uncertainty over continued U.S. support.
For its part, Russia is seeking assurances that Ukraine will never join NATO. During his campaign for the presidency, Trump promised a quick end to the nearly three-year-old war, but provided few details on how he hopes to do so.
Putin said Tuesday that his country could hold peace talks with Ukraine but ruled out talking directly to Zelensky, calling him "illegitimate" because his presidential term has expired.
Ukraine has not held an election since the start of the war and the subsequent imposition of martial law, which Kellogg said Sunday is allowed by the Ukrainian constitution.
Zelensky in turn said Putin was "afraid" of negotiations.
Kellogg told the that Trump "wants to do it," adding, "I feel very, very confident that we can actually get something done."
Asked how long that might take, he replied, "I'd like to say months, but not years."
After taking office on January 20, Trump threatened tougher sanctions against Russia and said Zelensky was ready to negotiate. | BGNES
