Trump: New sanctions against Russia if Putin doesn't negotiate peace in Ukraine

US President Donald Trump is considering imposing new sanctions on Russia if President Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate an agreement to end the war in Ukraine.

"That's what it looks like," Trump stressed at the White House when asked if the United States would implement additional sanctions against Moscow if the Russian president does not come to the negotiating table.

Ahead of his inauguration, Trump vowed to end the war in Ukraine as soon as he was sworn in, raising concerns that he would force Kiev to make concessions to Russia.

In an unusually harsh message to Putin, Trump said on January 21 that the Russian president "must make a deal."

"I think he's destroying Russia by not making a deal," the US president stressed.
