Republican nominee Donald Trump accused his new rival Kamala Harris of "became black" for campaign reasons during an exchange with African American journalists in Chicago.
"She suddenly became black," the former president said of Vice Pres.
"She was a full-blooded Indian, and all of a sudden she changed and became black," he said flatly, AFP reported.
Kamala Harris was born to a Jamaican father and an Indian mother. She is the first black and South Asian woman to target the presidency. The 50-year-old lawyer describes herself as a "black woman".
White House spokeswoman Caryn Jean-Pierre immediately condemned the comments, describing them as "offensive." "No one has the right to tell someone how they identify," she said.
Donald Trump's exchange of remarks with journalists in Chicago was particularly heated, with Donald Trump repeatedly accusing one of the reporters of spreading "fake news." | BGNES
