Trump considers appointing Grenell as US envoy to Iran

US President-elect Donald Trump is considering appointing Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, as special envoy for Iran, Yahoo News reported.

"He's definitely in play," said a source familiar with discussions surrounding the appointment.

Trump has not yet made a final decision on either personnel or strategy regarding Iran, including whether to impose new sanctions on the country, pursue diplomacy or both to stop its nuclear program.

Grenell is expected to be tasked with talking to countries in the region and beyond on the Iran issue, as well as monitoring Tehran's views on possible negotiations.

Iran's President Massoud Pezeshkian, who is considered a relative moderate, said after Trump's election that Tehran should "deal with the United States" and "manage" relations with its sworn enemy. | BGNES
