Trudeau could resign as PM within the week

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is likely to step down from office this week as he faces growing disapproval in his Liberal Party, The Globe and Mail newspaper reported.

Citing three anonymous sources familiar with internal party affairs, the Globe says Trudeau's announcement could be made as early as Monday, January 6.

Trudeau's popularity has waned in recent months, with his government barely surviving a series of no-confidence votes and his critics calling for him to resign.

He has vowed to stay on to lead the Liberals to an election scheduled for October 2025, but has faced further pressure from incoming U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned in December after disagreeing with Trudeau on how to respond to Trump's apparent plan.

Later that month, Trudeau announced major changes to his cabinet - replacing a third of his team in an attempt to resolve the political turmoil.

In November, he traveled to Florida to meet with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in an attempt to avert a trade war.

Since then, however, the US president-elect has lashed out at Trudeau on social media, repeatedly calling him Canada's "governor" and declaring that making the US's northern neighbour the 51st US state was a "great idea". | BGNES
