Tom Cruise looks set to reprise his role as Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in the third Top Gun film.
The 61-year-old action star first played the character on 1986's Top Gun and returned in 2022 for Top Gun: Maverick, which was a huge box office hit with $1.496 billion worldwide.
The film company Paramount has commissioned screenwriter Ehren Kruger to begin work on a third part of the franchise.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio also plans for director Joseph Kosinski to return and Cruise to reunite with co-stars Glenn Powell and Miles Teller.
While it's no surprise that Paramount would try to repeat the success of the second installment, the news surprised Hollywood, as Cruise recently signed a new contract with rival studio Warner Bros.
Cruise will develop and star in films for Warner Bros, but the deal is not exclusive, so the star could continue to work on Top Gun 3 at Paramount.
In addition to being a commercial hit, Top Gun: Maverick was also nominated for Best Picture at last year's Oscars.
At the time, legendary director Steven Spielberg said he was "thrilled" to see the blockbuster on the shortlist alongside Avatar: The Last Airbender. /BGNES
