Special prosecutor Jack Smith filed a new indictment against former US President Donald Trump in connection with his attempts to thwart the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. A similar case is already pending in a court in Washington. The new version of the document takes into account Trump's partial immunity from prosecution.
The indictment, cited by CNN, said that in the two months since the election, Donald Trump "spread lies that the result was rigged and he won." There are a total of four charges of attempting to illegally influence the outcome of the election.
The prosecution's previous version included the same charges. However, the new version lists Trump as a "presidential candidate" rather than the president (taking into account the partial immunity ruling). Clauses that the former president discussed the results of the election with representatives of the Ministry of Justice were excluded from the document.
Donald Trump, commenting on the review of the case, called the actions of the special prosecutor an attempt to distract voters. "This is simply an attempt to interfere in the election and divert the attention of the American people from the catastrophes that Kamala Harris has brought to our country," he wrote on the social network "Truth".
However, immunity does not extend to acts done in private. Donald Trump has several pending criminal cases, including storming the Capitol in 2020, mishandling classified documents and forgery to cover up payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels. | BGNES
