The victims of cyclone Chido are probably in the thousands

Hundreds and possibly thousands of people have died in Mayotte, the French Indian Ocean territory that was devastated by a powerful cyclone.

Rescue teams are still trying to reach some communities to search for survivors.

Entire villages were flattened by cyclone Chido, which brought winds of more than 225 km/h. The poorest people, living in makeshift shelters, have been particularly hard hit.

Part of Mayotte's population of 320,000 is struggling with acute shortages of food, water and shelter.

About 75% of the population lives below the national poverty line, and unemployment is about one in three.

French President Emmanuel Macron said his thoughts were with "compatriots in Mayotte who have gone through the most terrible few hours, and some have lost everything, even their lives." | BGNES, AFP
