Turkey's Ministry of Defense has received a draft contract from the United States for the acquisition of F-16 fighter jets and the modernization of existing aircraft, Sabah newspaper reported.
On January 27, the US State Department approved the upcoming sale of F-16 jets and modernization kits to Turkey worth $23 billion (718.16 billion Turkish liras), after Ankara gave the green light to Sweden's NATO membership.
Turkey, in October 2021, requested 40 new F-16 Block 70 aircraft and 79 upgrade kits from the US to upgrade its remaining F-16s to the new modification. The country was part of the F-35 program before its participation was suspended due to a dispute over Ankara's purchase of Russian S-500 air defense systems.
The draft contract is the first step in concluding the deal for the acquisition of the aircraft. The total price will become clear in the final stage. /BGNES
