Kamala Harris will be confirmed as the Democratic presidential nominee of the United States through electronic voting that began on August 1.
Less than two weeks after Joe Biden dropped out of the race, his 59-year-old running mate, Harris, has emerged as the only Democrat who can take on Republican Donald Trump in November and have a chance of winning.
Just under 4,000 delegates — grassroots activists and politicians spread throughout the primary process — submitted signatures in support of Harris to be placed on the ballot for the five-day electronic vote.
No other Democrat has contested her rise to the top of the list, making her confirmation as a presidential candidate a formality.
Harris received the support of 99 per cent of delegates who signed petitions, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) said in a statement. No one else has reached the 300-signature mark.
"Our delegates have the important responsibility - and opportunity - in the coming days to vote for Vice President Harris, ensuring that she is on the ballot in every state this November," said NCA Chairman Jaime Harrison.
Kamala Harris embarks on an election tour of seven key states.
The virtual roll call marks the official start of the 2024 convention, though it will begin when thousands of party faithful descend on Chicago on August 19.
Illinois will hold ceremonial ballots for Harris and her running mate in what is expected to be a raucous celebration of her rise to the top of the list. | BGNES
