The UN will vote on a new resolution for a cease-fire in Gaza

The Security Council will vote on a new draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, diplomats said, but the United States indicated it could veto it.

The vote comes a day after the United States presented a text on the need for a cease-fire that Russia and China vetoed and Arab states opposed, saying it was not clear enough about pressure on Israel.

The draft resolution, seen by AFP, "demands an immediate ceasefire" in the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan, leading to a "permanent sustainable ceasefire" respected by all parties.

The document also called for the "immediate and unconditional" release of hostages taken in the October 7 Hamas attack, as well as humanitarian access to the stricken Gaza Strip.

Three European countries - Malta, Slovenia and Switzerland - are co-authors of the resolution, along with Mozambique, Guyana and Sierra Leone. /BGNES
