Spanish lawmakers will vote on an amnesty law for Catalan separatists that is crucial for the remainder of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's term, AFP reported.
Drafted by the ruling Socialists and Catalonia's two separatist parties, the text is the most controversial piece of legislation parliament has voted on since Sánchez came to power in 2018, divisive even among his own constituents.
The vote comes at a time of heightened tension between the left-wing government and the right-wing opposition People's Party, which have traded insults for weeks over various bribery scandals.
Even the ceremonies marking the 20th anniversary of the March 11, 2004, Madrid train bombings, which killed 192 people, were marred by the ongoing war of words between the parties, with the Socialists on the offensive over how the then People's Government party has handled the assassinations badly.
The bill aims to end years of efforts to prosecute those involved in Catalonia's failed 2017 independence bid, which sparked Spain's worst political crisis in decades.
He will also vacate any convictions resulting from this attempt.
The Minister of Justice, Felix Bolanos, said that the measure will affect "about 400 people"./BGNES
