The Security Council will hold an emergency meeting after the Rafah strike

This strike killed dozens of people in a camp for displaced persons.

The UN Security Council will convene an emergency meeting today regarding the Israeli strike in Rafah.

Today, European countries - Spain, Ireland and Norway - are also expected to officially recognize a Palestinian state.

AFP journalists reported new Israeli strikes overnight in the southern border town of Gaza.

In Rafah, an Israeli attack targeting two senior Hamas members on May 26 sparked a fire that engulfed a center for displaced persons and killed 45 people, according to Gaza health officials.

The attack sparked a wave of international condemnation. The Palestinians and many Arab countries called it a "massacre." Israel said it was investigating the "tragic incident".

"There is no safe place in Gaza. This horror must stop," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wrote on social media.

The head of the UN humanitarian service, Martin Griffiths, also condemned the strikes: "We have seen the consequences of last night's totally unacceptable attack. To call it a 'mistake' is a message that means nothing to those killed, those grieving and those trying to save their lives."

Diplomats said the UN Security Council would meet on May 28 in an emergency meeting called by Algeria to discuss the attack.

The EU's foreign policy chief said he was "horrified by the news" of the strike, while French President Emmanuel Macron said he was "outraged" and the spokesman for the US National Security Council stressed that Israel "must take all possible precautions to protect civilians".

The Israeli military said it had launched an investigation. /BGNES
