The Joker: Folie à deux tops North American box office

The film "The Joker: Folie à deux" starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga topped the North American box office this weekend, ahead of "The Wild Robot," according to estimates from Exhibitor Relations.

The new opus about the Joker, Batman's sworn enemy, is a cross between a musical comedy and a comic book movie and is directed once again by Todd Phillips.

According to Exhibitor Relations, the Warner Bros. produced film grossed $40 million in its first weekend of release in Canada and the US, AFP reports.

It outpaced "The Wild Robot," a sci-fi flick from animation studio DreamWorks, which earned $18.7 million.

In that animated film, the robot Roz - whose English-language voice is performed by Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o - ends up on a deserted island after a typhoon. To survive, she befriends forest animals.

In third place is Tim Burton's " Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" and his Kingdom of the Dead with $10.3 million.

Michael Keaton, 73, dons the striped costume of the sinister and mischievous "bio-exorcist" trying to return to the world of the living.

Rounding out the top five is Paramount's "Transformers: The Beginning," which earned $5.3 million, followed by Universal's "Say Nothing" with $2.8 million.

Here's the rest of the top 10:

6. "White Bird" ($1.5 million)

7. "Deadpool and Wolverine" (1.5 million)

8. "The Substance" ($1.3 million)

9. "Megalopolis" (1.05 million)

10. "My Future Self" ($908,000). | BGNES
