The Israeli army has confirmed it killed an Al Jazeera journalist, mistaking him for a Hamas agent

The Israeli military (IDF) has confirmed that it has killed Al Jazeera journalist Ismail Al-Ghul in an airstrike in Gaza. According to the IDF, the person killed was a Hamas operative who participated in the October 7 attack on Israel, US News reported.

Al Jazeera rejected the "baseless allegations" which it said were an attempt to justify the deliberate killing of its journalists.

Qatar TV said Al-Ghul and cameraman Rami El Rifi were killed in an Israeli strike on Gaza City while on a filming assignment near the home of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas killed in Iran earlier in the day.

The IDF stated that the journalist was a member of the elite "Nuhba" unit, which participated in the October 7 attack. Israel alleges that al-Ghul instructed Hamas operatives on how to record operations, and that he was involved in recording and publicizing attacks on Israeli troops.

"His activities on the ground were an important part of Hamas' military activity," the Israeli military stressed.

Al-Jazeera said al-Ghul had worked for the network since November 2023 and his only occupation was as a journalist.
The Israeli government has banned Al-Jazeera from operating in Israel, accusing it of posing a threat to national security. | BGNES
