The full moon in August will be a rare Blue Supermoon

August's full moon will be a Blue Supermoon when it officially becomes 100% full at 18:26 GMT on August 19.

A Seasonal Blue Moon is the traditional definition of a blue moon and refers to the third full moon in a season where there are four full moons according to NASA. The second definition - arising from a misunderstanding of the original - is a monthly Blue Moon and refers to the second full moon in a calendar month. Today, this monthly Blue Moon is accepted as an alternate definition rather than an error, according to Time and Date.

A supermoon is more common and simply refers to any full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90 per cent of its closest approach to Earth, according to NASA. This year there will be four supermoons in a row: August 19, September 17, October 17 and November 15. The closest supermoon in 2024 will occur on October 17.

The next Blue Supermoon according to the monthly Blue Moon definition will occur on January 31, 2037, in Eastern Europe.

But the next Blue Moon according to the seasonal Blue Moon definition will occur on August 19, 2024, at 18:26 GMT.

After that, we won't see another Blue Supermoon (by seasonal definition) until August 20, 2032, | BGNES
