The first experiment of the Turkish astronaut Gezer was related to agricultural work
Turkish astronaut Alper Gezer's first experiment with plants exposed to salt stress will shed light on agricultural work for colonies that could be installed on the moon and Mars in the future, Anadolu Agency reported.
The experiment will show the responses of the Schrenkiella Parvula plant, which grows endemic to the Salt Lake, to salt and other stressors in the space environment.
Associate Professor in the team that developed the experiment, Dr. Mir Uzilday, said that they started working on the plant about 10 years ago, as soil salinization was one of the main obstacles to agricultural production.
Recalling that soil salinization is an increasingly strong environmental stressor, Uzildey said that with research it is important to understand how this plant adapts to the saline environment.
He explained that they intend to use this information to increase resistance to salt stress by changing the responses of agricultural plants to this phenomenon. /BGNES
