The Council of the EU approved today a plan worth 6 billion euros to support the countries of the Western Balkans. The aim of the plan is to accelerate reforms and economic growth in the region as they seek future membership of the bloc.
The EU Council announced that the plan, covering the period 2024 to 2027, will provide up to €2 billion in grants and €4 billion in loans. The aid is dependent on the reforms that the economies of the Western Balkan countries will carry out in accordance with EU rules.
"The facility will support a range of socio-economic and fundamental reforms, including reforms related to the rule of law and fundamental rights," the Council said.
The countries of the region have committed to adapt customs regulations and establish common border posts like EU member states. They also set goals for setting up industrial R&D centers and installing free Wi-Fi in public places.
In the document, the Council of the EU also states that it is a prerequisite for Serbia and Kosovo to receive aid if they "engage constructively with measurable progress and tangible results in the normalization of relations"./BGNES
