The European Commission has announced that it is granting 10.2 billion euros of cohesion funds to Hungary on the eve of the European summit, which Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has threatened to scuttle, AFP reported.
In December 2022, the Commission froze €21.7 billion of EU funds intended for Hungary due to alleged violations of the rule of law in Budapest. In a press release, the Commission explained that the reforms introduced by Hungary to improve the independence of its judiciary are sufficient to give it access to €10.2 billion.
BGNES reminds that Hungary was ready to lift the veto imposed on the EU's proposal to finance Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros over four years, if the EU unfreezes the funds intended for Hungary. /BGNES
