The EU's highest court has upheld the sanctions imposed on Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, The Guardian reports.
After President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops to enter Ukraine in February 2022, the EU imposed sanctions on Russian officials and a number of Russian businessmen, such as Abramovich, and froze hundreds of billions of dollars in Russian assets.
Abramovich has launched a legal challenge to the measure.
"The General Court dismisses the action brought by Mr Abramovich, thus upholding the restrictive measures taken against him," the EU high court said in its ruling.
Abramovich, who has Israeli citizenship and is the former owner of Chelsea football club, became one of the world's most powerful businessmen after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Forbes estimated his net worth at $9.2 billion. /BGNES
