The Emir of oil-rich Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, died today at the age of 86, the royal court announced. He ruled the emirate for three years.
"It is with great sadness and sorrow that we mourn... the death of Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait," said a statement broadcast on Kuwait's state television.
Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has been named the oil-rich country's new emir following the death of his predecessor.
"The Cabinet of Kuwait appoints the Crown Prince, His Highness Sheikh Meshaal... as Emir of the State of Kuwait," state TV channel reported. /BGNES
