In view of the results achieved since 2022, the European Commission (EC) considers that Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has achieved the necessary level of compliance with the criteria for membership in the European Union (EU), reported a BGNES reporter.
The Commission therefore recommends to the European Council to open accession negotiations with BiH as well as to adopt the framework for negotiations once the country has taken further steps in line with the report.
"Since the European Council granted BiH candidate status in December 2022, the political leadership's public commitment to the strategic goal of European integration has been continued with important reforms and has led to positive results. BiH has shown a strong commitment to making progress on long-awaited reforms, such as the adoption of the Law on Prevention of Conflict of Interest and the Law on Combating Money Laundering and the Financing of Terrorism," said the report published on the EC's website.
"BiH has taken significant steps to improve the judicial and prosecutorial system, the fight against corruption, organized crime and terrorism and to improve migration management by approving a mandate to negotiate an agreement on the status of Frontex. BiH has achieved and maintains full compliance with the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU, which is a significant positive step and is of crucial importance in these times of geopolitical turmoil," the document states./BGNES
