At least 111 people have died after an earthquake toppled buildings in northwest China, state media said, as rescuers scrambled to dig through the rubble.
About 100 people were killed and dozens injured in Gansu province after the strong, shallow quake, state broadcaster CCTV said, citing the province's earthquake relief headquarters.
According to CCTV, another 11 people were killed and 100 were injured in Haidong city in neighboring Qinghai province.
The quake caused extensive damage, including collapsed houses, and sent people running into the street for safety, state news agency Xinhua reported.
The earthquake, which was registered as a magnitude 5.9 by the US Geological Survey, struck Gansu near the border with Qinghai, where Haidong is located.
The epicenter is about 100 km southwest of Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province. Several smaller aftershocks have followed the initial earthquake.
Xinhua reported that the earthquake, which was felt in Xi'an in the northern province of Shanxi, about 570 km away, had a magnitude of 6.2./BGNES
