The number of victims of the deadly floods that hit northern Afghanistan has risen to 62 people, mostly women and children, AFP reported.
A disaster management official in the northern province of Baghlan said the floods were caused by heavy seasonal rains and residents were unprepared for the sudden surge of water.
"The death toll from today's flood in Baghlan province has risen to 62," said Hedayatullah Hamdard, head of the province's natural disaster management department.
He said the death toll "is likely to rise", adding that light rain continued overnight in many areas of the province.
Rescue personnel "are searching for possible victims under the mud and debris with the help of security forces from the national army and police," Hamdard said.
Videos posted on social media showed huge streams of muddy water flooding the roads and bodies shrouded in white and black cloths.
Flash floods and other torrential downpours have killed about 100 people in 10 of Afghanistan's provinces since mid-April, with officials saying no region has been completely spared.
Farmland is flooded in the country, where 80% of the more than 40 million people depend on agriculture for survival.
The rains also caused heavy damage in the northeastern province of Badakhshan and the central province of Ghor, officials said./BGNES
