US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Bill Burns presented a new proposal for ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas at a meeting held in Cairo, CNN reported.
The US proposal includes the release of more Palestinians from Israeli prisons in exchange for 40 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
The source said the United States would also like Palestinians from northern Gaza, who fled south because of the war, to be allowed to return to their homes.
The weekend meeting was attended by Qatari, Egyptian and Israeli officials and all confirmed they would study Washington's new proposal.
At the same time, representatives of Hamas, which the US and the EU consider a terrorist organization, met in Cairo with representatives of Egyptian intelligence, local media reported.
The war between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7 after Hamas carried out terrorist attacks in southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages.
According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, more than 33,100 Palestinians have been killed so far in Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip. /BGNES
