According to journalists from the media outlet the Carscoops, the new practice has begun to be used by law enforcement agencies in San Francisco. In the event that a Tesla car is parked at the scene of the crime, then the police can request the footage captured by the on-board camera.
Officers are aware of the Sentry Mode feature, where even an unplugged car starts recording video if it detects a potential threat - movement or noise. The videos are recorded on a flash drive located in the glove box. Journalists say electric car owners are usually willing to go along with the investigation.
In many cases, however, electric car owners may not be on the scene. The journalists explained that the police can then take the vehicle and obtain the data themselves.
On July 13, after a shootout near a store in Oakland, police obtained a warrant to temporarily seize three Tesla vehicles. It was suggested that the machines may have captured footage of the crime being committed. | BGNES
