NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán agreed that Budapest "will not block" NATO aid to Ukraine, AFP reported.
"What we agreed today with the prime minister is that Hungary will not block other allies from agreeing on financial support for Ukraine and on NATO's leading role in coordinating support for Ukraine," Stoltenberg said during the visit you are in the Hungarian capital.
Orbán welcomed the "difficult but constructive negotiations" with the NATO secretary general.
"Today we received guarantees that Hungary will not have to participate in military actions outside its territory," the Hungarian prime minister said at a joint press conference with Stoltenberg.
"Hungary will not give money or send people to this war, nor will Hungarian territory be used to participate in this war," he added.
However, Orbán warned that the "challenging period is not over", vowing to continue to advocate for "solutions that correspond to Hungary's interests" after the NATO summit in July.
Stoltenberg is trying to draw up a plan for a greater role for NATO in coordinating the supply of weapons and training to Kiev's forces. The plan will be presented at the alliance summit in Washington.
Hungary objected, arguing that this could draw the alliance into war with Russia. It has already refused to supply arms to Ukraine.
Orbán recently said he would like to "redefine" Hungary's position in the alliance to prevent any involvement in operations "outside NATO territory". | BGNES
