Stellantis abandons plan to lay off 1,100 US workers

Stellantis has reversed a decision to lay off 1,100 workers at its SUV plant in the US state of Ohio following the removal of CEO Carlos Tavares.

"Not a single employee will be laid off. Employees are expected to return to work as scheduled after the New Year," a Stellantis spokesman told AFP.

The decision comes at a time when "Stellantis continues to re-evaluate its strategy in North America," HE added.

The automaker announced the job cuts at its Toledo, Ohio, plant in early November, saying it was part of an effort to "restore its competitive advantage" amid a struggle with declining sales.

Stellantis, a 14-brand group that includes Chrysler, Peugeot and Fiat, had planned to cut operations at the Toledo South assembly plant from two to one shift.

Another 400 employees were to be transferred to a "third-party service provider." | BGNES, AFP
