After actor Carl Weathers passed away, several of his colleagues were quick to pay tribute and share their feelings about his legacy, including Pedro Pascal, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, who said in a heartfelt video posted on Instagram that "we would never have what we did with 'Rocky' without Carl".
Weathers played the main antagonist Apollo Creed in the original 1976 Oscar-winning Rocky.
The late star also starred in subsequent installments of the franchise until 1985. His character's son, played by Michael B. Jordan, is the central figure in the popular sequel to the Creed franchise, which launched in 2015.
In his social media video, Stallone said he was "torn" by the loss of Weathers, whom he called "an integral part of my life" and "my success."
"I give him incredible credit and praise because when he walked into that room and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness," Stallone continued.
Weathers, who starred in franchise-building productions including his unforgettable turn as part of Schwarzenegger's doomed platoon of jungle-hunting mercenaries in 1987's The Predator, wasn't always considered the highest-ranking member of the pantheon of brawny, blockbuster action stars like those in the Invincibles franchise, and it should be.
“He was absolutely brilliant – his voice, his size, his strength, his athleticism. But more importantly, his heart, his soul,” Stallone said this week.
He spoke to the camera while standing in front of a painting depicting a scene the two shared in one of the Rocky movies. The star pointed out that this was probably one of the last times they were in the boxing ring together. "I'll never forget it," Stallone emphasized.
Weathers died at the age of 76 on February 2.
His filmography includes over 75 appearances in films and television spanning 5 decades. /BGNES
