Music streaming giant Spotify has announced it will publish music videos on its platform in "select markets", entering a field long dominated by YouTube.
"The beta version of Spotify music videos starts rolling out today..." the company said in a statement, AFP reported.
She will release a limited catalog of hits by global artists such as Ed Sheeran, Doja Kat and Ice Spice, as well as local crowd favourites.
Initially, the music videos will only be available for a paid subscription in the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Kenya.
In early February, Spotify announced that it had surpassed 600 million monthly users, 236 million of whom were paid subscribers.
Google's streaming giant YouTube has long dominated music videos online, with much of the platform's most-watched content being them.
Songs like Luis Fonsi's "Despacito," Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" and K-pop star Psy's viral hit "Gangnam Style" have each garnered several billion views.
Since its launch, Spotify has invested heavily to fuel its growth by expanding into new markets and more recently with exclusive content such as podcasts. /BGNES
