South Africa's historic parliamentary elections have begun

On May 29, South African voters will choose the composition of the next parliament. Three decades after the establishment of democracy in the country, the power of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) is in question.

Some 27 million voters are registered for the most uncertain election since the ANC led the country out of apartheid rule. The opposition faces challenges from both the left and the right, AFP reported.

Voters will elect the 400 members of the National Assembly, and the deputies will in turn elect the country's president.

For the first time since democracy was established in 1994, the ANC may be forced to negotiate a coalition to stay in government.
